Step 10: Completion !
CONGRATULATIONS ! This is when the property officially changes ownership. Your solicitor will accept payment from the buyer’s solicitor and will confirm to you that the completion has taken place and it is now time for the keys to be handed over to the buyer.
Your agent will usually be the one to hand the keys over to the buyer and this won’t be done until they have had confirmation from your solicitor that they have received the money from the buyer’s solicitor and completion has taken place. If you are completing on a purchase it won’t be long until you get a call to say you can pick up the keys to your new home.
You will need to inform the utility companies that you have now moved and give them a final meter reading. It is a good idea to make sure you have your post redirected for a period of time while you inform everyone of your new address. You will need to inform the council you have moved for the council tax. It is advisable to inform your internet provider that you are moving when you exchange contracts to avoid as much time as possible without having internet until your provider can set you up at your new address.
